Trump and EU Strike 15% Tariff Agreement
Trump and the EU agreed on a 15% tariff on most European goods, including cars, averting a potential trade war.
The EU will buy $750 billion in U.S. energy products and invest $600 billion in the U.S. over three years. Zero tariffs apply to strategic items like aircraft, chemicals, and semiconductors. U.S. 50% tariffs on EU steel and aluminum remain, with quota talks ongoing.
The deal replaces threatened 30% U.S. tariffs and EU retaliations on $109 billion of U.S. goods. It requires EU state approvals. Economists predict a 0.3% GDP drop for the EU. The agreement brings trade stability amid Trump’s broader tariff campaign.

Samsung and Tesla Power Up AI Chip Production
Samsung and Tesla agreed on a $16.5 billion deal for AI chip production through 2033. Samsung’s Texas factory will produce Tesla’s next-gen AI6 chips after 2026.
Tesla’s AI4 chips are currently made by Samsung, while AI5 chips come from TSMC. Samsung’s foundry lost $3.6 billion in H1 2025 and holds 8% of the global market, behind TSMC’s 67%.
The deal revives Samsung’s delayed Texas plant and boosts its contract manufacturing. Samsung shares jumped 6% after the announcement. The partnership supports Samsung’s push to compete with TSMC and aligns with US-Korea trade talks aiming to reduce tariffs.

France to Recognize Palestine
Ukraine’s drone attack yesterday forced Russia to cancel its Navy Day parade in St. Petersburg for the first time since 2017. Over ten drones were downed near St. Petersburg, with 291 Ukrainian drones shot down across Russia that day.
The attacks closed Pulkovo airport for five hours, delaying 57 flights and diverting 22. Drone debris killed one man and injured three. President Putin attended a scaled-down naval exercise instead, pledging to boost navy combat readiness and shipbuilding.
Ukrainian strikes continued in Sumy, causing casualties. The attacks reveal vulnerabilities in Russian air defenses and demonstrate Kyiv’s expanding drone capabilities deep inside Russian territory.

Pill Makes Blood Deadly for Mosquitoes
The BOHEMIA trial in Kenya and Mozambique showed monthly ivermectin doses reduced malaria infections by 26% in Kenyan children aged 5 to 15. Over 20,000 participants received more than 56,000 treatments.
Ivermectin made human blood toxic to mosquitoes, offering protection where insecticide resistance and outdoor biting limit bed nets and sprays. The drug had a good safety profile with mild side effects only. Mozambique faced delivery challenges due to a cyclone and cholera.
Ivermectin also decreased scabies, head lice, and bed bugs, providing additional health benefits. WHO recommends further studies, and experts see ivermectin as a complementary malaria control tool alongside existing methods.

Removing Extra Chromosome Behind Down Syndrome
Japanese scientists used CRISPR-Cas9 to remove the extra chromosome 21 causing Down syndrome, achieving 30–37% correction in stem cells and skin fibroblasts.
Edited cells showed normalized gene expression, better growth, and improved mitochondrial function. Suppressing DNA repair genes LIG4 and POLQ increased editing efficiency but led to some off-target effects.
The team aims to refine precision and explore long-term and in vivo applications. Down syndrome causes developmental issues and increases Alzheimer’s risk due to amyloid buildup.
While this is the first chromosome-level editing for trisomy 21, clinical use remains distant amid safety and ethical challenges. The goal is to alleviate biological impacts, not eliminate the condition.
