RFK Jr. vs. Senate
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced sharp Senate criticism over his vaccine policies, including FDA limits on COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to seniors and high-risk groups since August 2025.
He canceled $500 million in COVID vaccine research funding and fired CDC Director Susan Monarez after less than a month amid accusations of internal pressure. CDC and WHO estimate 1.2 million American COVID deaths, while U.S. vaccination rates decline and states like Florida plan to end vaccine mandates.
Over 1,000 health officials demand Kennedy’s resignation. Republican Senators praised Operation Warp Speed’s role in saving 14.4 million lives but questioned Kennedy’s stance on vaccine effectiveness, revealing deep bipartisan divides over U.S. vaccine strategy.

Trump’s Fed Nominee
Stephen Miran, Trump’s nominee for the Federal Reserve Board, faces criticism for planning to keep his White House job while serving on the Fed, raising concerns about the central bank’s independence.
Miran would take unpaid leave but only resign if nominated for a full term. Democrats and some Republicans warn this dual role threatens unbiased decision-making. Miran insists he would act independently despite Trump’s pressure to cut interest rates.
He refused to dispute claims of manipulated jobs data. His prior work advocates stronger presidential control over the Fed, contradicting his current stance on independence.

FTC Targets Noncompete Agreements
The FTC barred Gateway Services from enforcing noncompete agreements on 1,800 employees at 100 locations, preventing restrictions on workers joining competitors for one year post-employment.
This action, led by FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, targets unfair noncompete practices without imposing a nationwide ban after a prior rule was struck down by a judge. The decision split the Commission along party lines, with Republicans supporting the settlement and Democrats opposing it for ignoring industry consolidation.
The FTC plans to gather public input and pursue further actions against restrictive noncompetes. The move signals increased scrutiny of noncompete clauses affecting hundreds of thousands of U.S. workers.

Venezuela-U.S. Tensions Escalate
On September 2, the U.S. carried out an airstrike killing 11 members of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang, designated a terrorist group involved in drug and sex trafficking.
Two Venezuelan F-16s flew over the U.S. destroyer USS Jason Dunham on September 4 in response, which the Pentagon called “highly provocative.”
Maduro deployed drones and warships, calling the U.S. presence a threat. Legal experts question the strike’s legality and warn of escalating Caribbean tensions.

3D-Printed Spinal Cords
Researchers developed 3D-printed scaffolds with microscopic channels to guide spinal neural progenitor cells derived from human stem cells. Implanted in rats with severed spinal cords, these scaffolds promoted new nerve connections bridging the injury.
The rats regained notable movement as the new nerve cells integrated with existing tissue. This approach bypasses damaged nerve areas, addressing paralysis that current treatments cannot reverse.
The team aims to scale the technology and begin human clinical trials, potentially offering a new treatment for spinal cord injuries affecting over 300,000 Americans.

Gene Revival to Fight Gout
Scientists revived the uricase gene, lost to humans 20 million years ago, which breaks down uric acid linked to gout, kidney disease, and liver damage.
Using CRISPR, they engineered human liver cells to produce uricase, lowering uric acid and preventing fat buildup from fructose. The enzyme targeted peroxisomes effectively.
Current treatments for hyperuricemia affect 20% of Americans but have limitations. Lowering uric acid could also prevent heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney stones, and fatty liver disease. Animal testing is needed before human trials.

“There is a kind of man who is as reliable as a weathercock in a hurricane, whose convictions last about as long as a summer shower. His "yes" from yesterday is his "no" today, and by tomorrow he'll have forgotten both, putting him in a constant state of civil war with the person he used to be a minute ago.”
