hine...We should not allow people who are anti America using our taxpayer grant money to a private university that has billions of dollars of their own endowment money to use. They are not non-profit and should use their own excess funds to manage their business like the rest of the paying Americans.
mdul...Trump made a big deal of seeking to eradicate DEI. DEI is based on considering other factors when making decisions. However, in those cases where he wants a certain outcome, he touts considering factors wholly outside the purview. I think it is a very small percentage of Americans that actually believe that Trump's cuts at Harvard (and other institutions) are actually intended to affect some antisemitism change. Virtually all Americans understand it is just some words to make it seem like he is not just seeking to bring another perceived opponent to heel. Now, I find myself wondering how things would play out if we still have a SCOTUS that was interpreting the law, rather than a SCOTUS that has become an extension of the Republican Party playing the role of conservative activist from an irreversible dais. With the current SCOTUS, the only question is what contortions they will make to somehow find in Trump's favor.

plgi...Harvard's acceptance of federal and state government aid obligates the University to operate within the confines of burdensome government regulations and the interference from Washington bureaucrats regarding curriculum, admissions standards, policy, practices and more. The Courts interference in this relationship is an overreach of their roll, IMO.

lkdn...The greatest advancement in health has been immunization for PREVENTION of diseases. As a critical care pediatrician I’ve personally have seen the virtual elimination of sepsis and meningitis from pneumococcus and hemophillus influenza. These 2 organisms used to result in critical illness in children as late as 1990 and have subsequently been almost eliminated. Similar results have been seen in the adult population. RSV disease filled the pediatric hospitals each winter with infants in severe respiratory distress. The vaccine has reduced the incidence substantially. Senior adults have also profited. Complications of mumps could result in destruction of testicles and sterility in girls. Hepatitis b can cause liver failure. We’ve seen recent deaths from measles in Texas in the epidemics among the unimmunized. Now we’re a the brink of immunizations for some cancers. Florida gets many visitors from countries where with poor immunizations this returning these diseases to the USA. Just recently we received polio boosters because we were traveling to a country where polio is still occurring. I can remember my mother avoiding crowds and wiping our hands in antiseptic to prevent polio prior to immunization. And, of course, vaccination eliminated smallpox. Trump brags about pushing the development of COVID vaccine that was killing children and the elderly. Immunization has done more to improve health than any other modality. It is absolutely ridiculous to limit the mandate. Without the mandate insurance will not cover the costs of the shots and the burden of disease will fall on the least capable to afford to pay.

hine...It should depend on the disease and circumstances. We have a growing percentage of older population who did not have all of the shots they have today which in itself indicates that some shots should be optional. Three day measles is much different than rubella (German measles) but most of us had both of those without a shot and with no problems. Same with mumps and chicken pox. We did take shots or syrum for polio and small pox, so sometimes there are diseases that can cause bad problems for the masses. The gamble that a vaccine can cause multiple issues later for high percentages of people, more than would have suffered had they not taken the shot was proved in the covid debacle, so you shouldn’t force people to take shots that can also affect them in other worse ways.

But, Federally funded institutions should be able to refuse services to those putting public health at risk. Living in the woods and not attending public schools or using public transportation, etc.. People might not also realize but many of the medical professional associations have also started to create their own vaccine recommendations, knowing that the CDC can no longer be relied upon for scientific information. So, a patchwork of recommendations will now take hold. After having defeated some of the worst diseases known to mankind, Republicans and the MAHA movement are intent on seeing them start killing and wounding again, with Florida being at the forefront. I thought one of the most amusing parts (if there is any amusement to be found) was the press conference given by the FL Surgeon General announcing the change. He said "who am I to tell you what to do with your body". Wow. You're supposed to be the public health advocate who is supposed to tell us what is the best thing to do. And, let's not even get into the juxtaposition with abortion restrictions telling women exactly what they can and cannot do with their own bodies. Bottom line, this wholly dismisses public health as a primary concern and reflects political pandering to a populace sufficiently uninformed about what they should be doing for the benefit of us all.

juli...For those of us who were children in the 50's and 60's, we remember the fear of polio. We saw the photos of children in the dreaded iron lungs and those with braces on their legs. The government-mandated polio vaccine prevented so many of us from contracting that awful disease and has kept this nation free from us since then. As a parent, I relied on my children's doctor to guide me in the best ways to keep my children healthy. He had the science-based knowledge and the science-based resources to help me do the right thing for my kids. Do today's parents have that available to them? I suspect not many do. Our doctors are there to guide us in the most preventable methods to keep our families healthy. That is the essence of public health. If one is healthy, so is society.

tdhu...With cannabis, I’d be concerned about dependence risks and long-term unknown risks, since studies already show that higher doses may be needed for the positive outcomes to persist due to increased tolerance.

jane...Elevated potassium is a possible risk with drugs affecting aldosterone such as spironolactone so it must be watched for with all these drugs
hine...More research should be focused on the factors in the population that had potassium issues with the drug to see what the underlying cause was of that problem.
