Trump’s Harvard Cuts Ruled Unconstitutional
A federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s $2.6 billion cut in Harvard’s research funding, ruling the cuts violated the university’s First Amendment rights and lacked due process.
The administration froze and canceled grants over alleged mishandling of antisemitism, but the court found these claims were a pretext for ideological demands after Harvard refused to alter governance, hiring, and programs.
The ruling stops further funding freezes or denials without legal procedure, potentially restoring support for hundreds of projects. The White House plans to appeal. Other Ivy League schools, including Columbia, settled similar disputes.
The case reflects tensions over federal funding, free speech, and campus policies after the 2023 Israel-Gaza conflict.

Florida Ends All Vaccine Mandates
Florida will end all state vaccine mandates, including for public school students, becoming the first U.S. state to do so. Governor DeSantis and Surgeon General Ladapo emphasize personal choice over government requirements.
Currently, roughly 5.1% of Florida kindergartners are exempt from vaccines, second only to Texas in exemptions. Public health experts warn this may lead to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, citing rising measles cases nationwide.
Critics predict increased disease spread in schools, communities, and among immunocompromised individuals and tourists. In response, West Coast states formed a health alliance to maintain unified vaccine recommendations.

Job Openings Drop to 10-Month Low
U.S. job openings fell by 176,000 in July to 7.181 million, the lowest since September 2024, with openings per unemployed worker dropping below one for the first time since April 2021.
Hiring rose slightly by 41,000 to 5.308 million, while layoffs increased by 12,000, mainly in construction. Job vacancies declined sharply in healthcare, retail, and arts sectors but rose in construction, manufacturing, finance, and federal government roles.
Employment growth slowed to 35,000 monthly over three months, down from 123,000 the prior year. Unemployment edged up to 4.2%. The Federal Reserve is expected to cut rates amid labor risks, though inflation concerns persist.

Tragedy Strikes Lisbon
Lisbon’s Elevador da Glória funicular derailed on September 3, killing 15 and injuring 18, five critically. The historic vehicle crashed into a building while descending a steep hill during rush hour.
The accident disrupts Lisbon’s tourism sector, which attracted 8.5 million visitors last year. The city declared a day of mourning, with condolences from national and international leaders.
The crash underscores risks associated with aging urban transit systems heavily used by residents and tourists.

Cannabis as a Long-Term Sleep Aid
A study of 124 insomnia patients using cannabis over 18 months found sleep quality improved (SQS score from 2.66 to 3.81). Anxiety and depression decreased significantly at all intervals. Pain levels fell, and daily quality of life improved.
About 9% reported mild side effects like fatigue and dry mouth; no serious events occurred. Sleep benefits peaked in the first month but waned, suggesting tolerance and potential need for higher doses. Experts warn of dependence risks and unclear long-term safety.
Cannabis was administered as oil or dried flower at controlled doses. While cognitive behavioral therapy remains preferred, cannabis may be a viable alternative for treatment-resistant insomnia. Further trials are needed.

Slashing Resistant Hypertension
Baxdrostat, a new pill targeting aldosterone production, lowers blood pressure in resistant hypertension patients unresponsive to standard treatments.
In a Phase 3 trial with nearly 800 participants, baxdrostat reduced systolic blood pressure by 14.5-15.7 mmHg (versus 5.8 mmHg placebo) after 12 weeks. About 40% reached healthy levels, compared to fewer than 20% on placebo. The drug works by inhibiting aldosterone synthase, addressing a key cause of difficult-to-control hypertension.
Side effects included increased potassium, with 2.3-3% experiencing serious hyperkalemia. Blood pressure reductions persisted weeks after stopping treatment. Baxdrostat offers a promising new approach for millions with resistant hypertension worldwide.
