EU Chief’s Plane GPS Jammed—Russia Suspected

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s plane faced GPS jamming near Plovdiv Airport, Bulgaria, forcing pilots to rely on ground navigation and paper maps.

Bulgarian authorities suspect Russian interference, part of a surge in jamming incidents across Eastern Europe since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Tens of thousands of such events have disrupted aviation near the Baltic states and Russian borders, including incidents involving UK and Finnish flights.

The EU plans to launch more low Earth orbit satellites to detect interference and enhance aviation safety. Officials warn GPS jamming heightens accident risks and view it as part of Russia’s broader hybrid threat campaign, which Russia denies.

How credible do you find the claim that Russia is behind the GPS jamming incident near Plovdiv Airport?

Nestlé Ousts CEO

Nestlé removed CEO Laurent Freixe after one year for violating its business conduct code by having an undisclosed romantic relationship with a direct subordinate. Freixe denied the relationship initially and will receive no exit package.

Philipp Navratil, head of Nestlé’s Nespresso unit and executive board member since early 2025, replaced him immediately. This marks Nestlé’s second CEO change in a year following Mark Schneider’s ouster.

Shares have dropped 17% in the past year amid leadership instability, tough consumer conditions, and U.S. tariffs. Chairman Paul Bulcke plans to step down next year but defended the governance decision. Analysts question Nestlé’s mid-term strategy amid ongoing turmoil.

How effective do you think corporate governance reforms are in preventing executive misconduct?

Crypto’s U.S. Surge

In the Hong Kong Crypto event, a Chinese hardware firm announced plans to build crypto rigs in the U.S., underscoring America’s rise in crypto.

The Trump family’s crypto venture, WLFI, launched publicly, boosting their paper wealth to $5 billion. WLFI tokens now trade openly, similar to IPO shares.

Their dealings include $750 million in circular trades and links to PancakeSwap and Binance. President Trump signed the Genius Act, advancing U.S. crypto regulation and positioning the industry as a potential major government debt buyer.

What is your view on high-profile political families launching their own cryptocurrencies?

Afghanistan Earthquake Kills Over 800

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province on September 1, 2025, killing at least 812 and injuring 2,800 across Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman provinces.

Entire villages were destroyed, with mud-brick homes collapsing and thousands displaced. Rescue efforts are hindered by rough terrain, landslides, blocked roads, and heavy rains.

Healthcare is overwhelmed; Kunar’s main hospital treated over 200 patients despite limited capacity, while 80+ clinics closed due to funding cuts.

International aid has dropped due to the rise of the Taliban from $3.8 billion in 2022 to $767 million in 2025. India, the UK, and the UN have provided limited relief. Cultural barriers restrict aid access for women, increasing vulnerability.

Sources: Reuters, BBC, JapanTimes.

How should the international community balance aid to Afghanistan given recent political changes and funding cuts?

Reversing Autism and Epilepsy

Researchers identified the reticular thalamic nucleus (RTN) as a driver of autism-like behaviors and seizures in mice lacking the Cntnap2 gene.

RTN overactivity during sensory and social experiences led to repetitive behaviors, social deficits, heightened sensitivity, increased motor activity, and epilepsy-like seizures. About 30% of autistic individuals also have epilepsy, linked here through RTN pathways.

An experimental drug, Z944, reduced RTN activity and reversed symptoms. Genetic neuromodulation of RTN neurons similarly lessened symptoms, while increasing RTN activity in normal mice induced autism-like behaviors.

This identifies RTN overactivity as a cause and potential treatment target for both autism and epilepsy.

Given that the study’s findings are based on mouse models, how confident are you that the results will translate to humans?

Melatonin Gummies Trigger Safety Alarm

US retailer iHerb stopped selling melatonin gummies to Australia after rising non-fatal overdoses in children. Melatonin, used safely in prescribed low doses for neurodevelopmental disorders, is unregulated as a dietary supplement in the US.

Gummies often have inconsistent melatonin levels and sometimes contain serotonin, posing risks. Increased calls to poison control in Australia report overdoses, with seven suspected child deaths in the US linked to gummies.

These products resemble candy, raising accidental overdose risks. Experts advise against unsupervised online purchases; doctors should manage use and recommend behavioral treatments.

Long-term safety in typically developing children remains unclear, and overdose requires emergency care.

Is melatonin a safe sleep aid for children without neurodevelopmental disorders when used without medical supervision?
