China’s Massive Military Parade
China held its largest military parade on September 3, 2025, displaying advanced weaponry including hypersonic, intercontinental ballistic, and anti-ship missiles, drones, robot dogs, and armored vehicles.
President Xi Jinping led the event with Russia’s Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un attending. The parade commemorated Japan’s WWII surrender and included 80,000 birds released over Tiananmen Square. Taiwan remains a focus, with Xi ordering military readiness for potential invasion by 2027 amid ongoing drills near the Taiwan Strait.
The U.S. and most Western leaders boycotted the event. U.S. President Trump accused the trio of conspiring against America. The parade underscores China’s push to challenge U.S. global dominance.

US Military Strikes Drug Boat from Venezuela
The US military killed 11 people in a strike on a drug boat linked to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua in international waters of the southern Caribbean.
The operation is part of a larger US military buildup involving seven warships, a nuclear-powered submarine, and surveillance aircraft. The drugs were likely destined for Trinidad or another Caribbean country.
The US has increased pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, accusing him of leading a drug cartel and doubling the reward for his arrest to $50 million. Maduro denies this and warns of armed resistance.
Venezuela questioned the strike footage’s authenticity, but no manipulation was found. The Pentagon has withheld full strike details.

Google’s Antitrust Victory
A court ruled Google illegally monopolized online search but did not force a breakup. Google must share search data with qualified competitors to boost competition.
The court rejected breaking up Chrome or Android and allowed Google’s $20 billion annual deal with Apple to continue, banning only exclusive contracts blocking rival search apps.
The ruling follows five years of litigation; Google plans to appeal. Shares of Alphabet and Apple rose post-decision. Data sharing may aid AI competitors. The DOJ called it a win but is considering next steps.
Google faces additional antitrust suits related to its app store and ad technology amid broader Big Tech scrutiny.

US Regulators Ease Bank Exams
US regulators in 2025 have reduced bank exams, scaling back focus on ESG, climate risk, and social issues. The OCC, Federal Reserve, and CFPB have postponed or canceled many reviews, emphasizing core financial risks like capital and liquidity instead.
This shift follows complaints about subjective, hostile exams and government staffing shortages. Regulators now prefer informal guidance over formal disciplinary actions. Critics warn this may weaken oversight, citing 2023 bank failures linked to regulatory gaps.
The CFPB also cut staff and trimmed oversight. Major banks, including JPMorgan, support the lighter supervision. Meanwhile, European regulators continue prioritizing ESG issues, contrasting with the US’s narrower supervisory approach.

New microRNA Biomarker Could Revolutionize Early Detection
Researchers identified microRNA miR-423-5p as a blood biomarker that reflects kidney microvascular health by protecting peritubular capillaries, crucial for waste removal and oxygen delivery.
Loss of these vessels signals chronic kidney failure. In tests with 51 transplant patients, miR-423-5p levels correlated with vessel health. In mice, injecting miR-423-5p preserved vessels and reduced kidney damage. This biomarker enables earlier detection of kidney injury, aiding high-risk groups like elderly and transplant patients.
Scientists are developing delivery methods for human treatment. The discovery may also benefit conditions involving small vessel loss, such as heart, lung, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Breaking Down Fat
Researchers developed edible microbeads made from green tea polyphenols, vitamin E, and seaweed that bind dietary fats in the gut to block absorption.
In a 30-day rat study, those on a high-fat diet plus microbeads lost 17% body weight, with less fat tissue and reduced liver damage. The beads increased fat excretion without causing gastrointestinal side effects, unlike the drug orlistat.
All ingredients are FDA-approved and production can scale easily. A human clinical trial with 26 participants is underway. This method offers a noninvasive, safe approach to obesity by preventing fat absorption in the digestive tract.
