Armed National Guard in Washington
Starting August 24, some of the 2,000 National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., began carrying firearms under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s approval and President Trump’s directive.
Trump plans to expand armed troop deployments to cities like Baltimore, Chicago, and New York. Baltimore has seen homicide declines of 24% in 2024 and 42% since 2021.
Democratic leaders and civil rights activists oppose the deployments, calling them unnecessary and racially motivated.
Legal experts anticipate lawsuits over federal troop deployment without state consent. Trump cites Title 10 Section 12406 to justify federal intervention in local law enforcement.

Powell Signals Fed’s September Rate Cut
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled a possible interest rate cut in September, citing a weakening labor market and elevated inflation risks. Current rates stand at 4.25%–4.5%.
Powell described tariff-driven inflation as temporary and noted rising employment risks. The Fed is revising its monetary policy, dropping the 2020 inflation targeting framework to act more preemptively on inflation and labor market conditions.
Markets responded positively: S&P 500 rose 1.5%, Nasdaq 1.9%, Russell 2000 over 3%, while two-year Treasury yields fell to 3.69%.
Political pressure from Trump persists, with demands for a 3 percentage point rate cut and attacks on Fed officials, but Powell affirmed decisions remain data-dependent and independent of politics.

Ukraine Strikes Russian Nuclear Plant
On August 24, Ukraine launched drone attacks on Russian infrastructure. A drone strike at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant caused a fire and cut reactor No. 3’s capacity by 50%, with no radiation increase or injuries.
Simultaneous strikes hit the Ust-Luga fuel export terminal, triggering a large fire extinguished without casualties. Russia said it intercepted 95 Ukrainian drones, while Ukraine shot down 48 Russian drones and a missile.
Additional attacks targeted the Samara oil refinery and logistics hubs in Belgorod and Voronezh, disrupting operations. Fighting continued in eastern Ukraine, with territorial gains reported.
A prisoner exchange returned 146 soldiers each. Canada and Norway pledged over $2 billion in military aid to Ukraine.

Apple’s Three Year Bet
Apple will release three major iPhone models from 2025 to 2027. The iPhone 17 Air, launching in fall 2025, will be ultra-thin with a new camera bar, A19 chip, C1 modem, and USB-C port, but may have reduced battery life.
In 2026, Apple introduces the iPhone Fold, its first foldable iPhone, featuring an external screen, a large internal display, and returning Touch ID.
For 2027, Apple's 20th iPhone anniversary, the company plans the iPhone 20 or XX with rounded edges and Liquid Glass, moving away from angular designs since iPhone 12.

Ease Knee Osteoarthritis
A study tested 68 people with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis using personalized foot angle adjustments during walking. Changing foot angles by 5 to 10 degrees inward or outward reduced knee joint load by 4%, while normal walking increased load by 3%.
Pain dropped 2.5 points on a 10-point scale, matching common pain medications. The approach used gait analysis, motion capture, and biofeedback over six training sessions. Participants practiced the new gait daily for a year.
This method may delay knee surgery and avoids medication side effects. Researchers plan to use AI and smartphones to simplify analysis and will test effectiveness on obese patients.

Cancer’s Achilles’ Heel
Researchers found that cancer cells’ drug resistance relies on chromatin’s 3D structure, which stores cellular “memory” and helps evade chemotherapy. Using computational models, they identified that altering chromatin can reduce cancer adaptability.
The FDA-approved drug celecoxib changes chromatin packing, boosting chemotherapy’s cancer-killing effect in lab and mouse ovarian cancer models—doubling tumor reduction compared to chemotherapy alone. This approach could lower chemotherapy doses and side effects.
Targeting chromatin’s physical organization opens new cancer treatment avenues by preventing resistance. Beyond cancer, modulating chromatin structure may aid therapies for diseases like Alzheimer’s and heart disease by restoring cellular function.
