Trump’s Tariff Test
President Trump will implement tariffs ranging from 10% to 50% on August 7, targeting multiple U.S. trading partners.
Tariffs on Indian goods doubled to 50% over India’s Russian oil imports. Switzerland faces a 39% tariff; Brazil 50%; Canada 35%. Eight key partners, including the EU and Japan, obtained reduced 15% rates.
Average U.S. tariffs rose to 20%, the highest in a century, potentially generating $300 billion annually in federal revenue. Companies like Caterpillar and Marriott expect $15 billion in 2025 profit losses.
India condemned the tariffs as unfair, deepening U.S.-India tensions amid India’s growing ties with Russia and China.

Trump’s 100% Chip Tariff
President Trump imposed a 100% tariff on imported semiconductors but exempted companies producing or investing in U.S. chip manufacturing, including Apple’s $600 billion and Nvidia’s multi-hundred-billion-dollar commitments.
Samsung and SK Hynix may face reduced tariffs under a trade deal, while TSMC, with U.S. plants, is likely exempt. The tariff aims to boost domestic production, currently at 12% of global output, down from 40% in 1990.
The move could raise prices on electronics and autos, and challenges smaller foreign suppliers without U.S. factories. The EU set a 15% tariff on many U.S. imports in response. Chip sales rose 19.6% year-over-year, with related stocks gaining after the announcement.

China’s Export Surge Defies US Tariffs
China’s exports rose 7.2% in July to $322 billion, beating forecasts, while imports grew 4.1%, defying expected declines. Exports to the US dropped 21.67%, but shipments to ASEAN countries increased 16.59%, indicating a regional trade shift.
The US-China tariff truce expires August 12, risking higher tariffs that could disrupt supply chains. New US tariffs include up to 40% on rerouted goods and 100% on chips and pharmaceuticals.
China’s trade surplus narrowed to $98.24 billion in July but rose 32% year-to-date. Manufacturing contracted with a PMI of 49.3, though domestic demand rose.

United Airlines Grounded by Tech Glitch
United Airlines’ Unimatic system failed at 6:12 p.m. ET, disrupting flight data management, including weight and balance. This caused over 1,000 flight delays—about 34-35% of the day’s schedule—and canceled more than 40 flights across major hubs like Newark, Chicago, Denver, Houston, and San Francisco.
United Express and airborne flights were unaffected. Operations resumed late Wednesday, but delays persisted. The FAA assisted, and the airline provided customer accommodations. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the problem was isolated to United’s systems, not the broader air traffic control network.
This outage follows similar IT failures at Alaska and American Airlines earlier in 2025, underscoring ongoing airline technology vulnerabilities.

Early Clues to Multiple Sclerosis
Research shows multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms can appear up to 15 years before diagnosis, with early signs including fatigue, headaches, dizziness, anxiety, and depression.
Doctor visits for neurological and eye issues increase 8-9 years prior. Mental health changes may be key early indicators.
Separately, genetic studies focus on why some carriers of the Epstein-Barr virus develop MS, using “recall by genotype” to identify biological differences pre-symptoms.
These findings suggest MS has a long prodromal phase, offering a chance for earlier diagnosis and intervention. MS affects 2.8 million globally, and current treatments only slow progression; early detection could improve outcomes and aid prevention efforts.

Titanium Revolution
Engineers developed a 3D-printed titanium alloy costing 29-33% less than standard Ti-6Al-4V by replacing vanadium with cheaper elements.
The new alloy delivers higher strength and ductility, with uniform grain structures achieved through a novel formula avoiding columnar microstructures. Produced via advanced direct energy deposition, it enables faster, less wasteful manufacturing.
Tested for tensile strength, further fracture and impact toughness assessments are underway for aerospace certification.
Targeted for large parts like airframes and brackets, the alloy’s design includes a new predictive model for grain structure, cutting development time and costs. A provisional patent is filed, and industry partnerships are being pursued.
