Trump Threatens with More Tariffs

President Trump will raise U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports from 25% to 35% starting August 1, targeting goods outside USMCA coverage. He warned of further increases if Canada retaliates.

Trump cited fentanyl smuggling, Canadian trade barriers affecting U.S. dairy, and the trade deficit as reasons. Canada, the U.S.’s second-largest trading partner, faces economic strain and rising unemployment amid the dispute.

Trump also plans 15%-20% tariffs on other countries, with Brazil hit by 50%. Legal experts say these tariffs may violate WTO and USMCA rules, risking retaliation and higher costs for U.S. businesses and consumers.

How likely is it that these tariffs will lead to higher prices for American consumers?

The pattern is clear: when innovative companies successfully integrate AI into everyday products, tech giants pay billions to acquire them. Google paid $3.2B for Nest. Amazon spent $1.2B on Ring. LG just acquired startup Homey, signaling their move into the smart home.

Now, a new AI-powered smart home company is following their exact path to acquisition—but is still available to everyday investors at just $2.00 per share. With proprietary technology that connects smart shades to all major AI ecosystems, this startup has achieved what big tech wants most: seamless AI integration into daily home life.

Over 10 patents, 200% year-over-year growth, and a forecast to 5x revenue this year — this company is moving fast to seize the smart home opportunity. The acquisition pattern is predictable. The opportunity to get in before it happens is not.

Bitcoin Breaks Records

Bitcoin surged above $116,700 on July 11, 2025, up 24% this year and 102% over 12 months, fueled by $4.4 billion institutional inflows.

Binance holds nearly half the crypto exchange market with $31 billion in stablecoin reserves backing $340 million in leveraged longs. U.S. crypto-friendly policies, including a strategic crypto reserve and supportive regulators like SEC Chair Paul Atkins, bolster confidence.

The overall cryptocurrency market cap hit $3.69 trillion, with Bitcoin surpassing Alphabet’s valuation. Technical indicators suggest continued gains toward $130,000, though short-term corrections near $97,000 may occur.

Ethereum and major altcoins also posted notable gains, reflecting broad market momentum.

Is Bitcoin’s current price level (above $116,000) justified by fundamentals, or is it mainly driven by market sentiment?

Houthis Sink Two Greek Ships

Houthi militants attacked and sank two Greek-owned, Liberian-flagged bulk carriers, Magic Seas and Eternity C, in the Red Sea over July 7–9, 2025, using missiles, RPGs, and drones.

Three crew members died; 10 were rescued, while at least 15 remain missing or held hostage. The attacks occurred without international naval response, as U.S. and European forces maintained a cease-fire covering only American vessels.

The assaults disrupted a critical trade route, reducing daily sailings from 43 to 32 and doubling insurance costs. The Houthis linked the strikes to support for Hamas and threatened ongoing attacks until the Gaza conflict ends.

Who do you believe holds the primary responsibility for ensuring security in the Red Sea shipping lanes?

Wells Fargo Cuts Rent-Reward Credit Card Deal Early

Wells Fargo is ending its partnership with Bilt's rent-rewards credit card program five years early due to losses as high as $10 million per month.

Many cardholders paid balances in full, limiting interest income, while Wells covered landlord transaction fees of 2-3%. The bank also flagged potential money-laundering risks linked to rent payments.

After failed renegotiation attempts, Wells threatened either a $250-$300 annual fee or program termination. Bilt is developing a new card with fintech Cardless, set for a February 2026 launch.

Wells Fargo tightened credit standards and rejected Barclays’ demand for a steep discount on $1.4 billion in outstanding balances. The move signals caution toward unprofitable co-branded cards.

Do you believe partnerships between traditional banks and fintech companies typically benefit consumers or pose hidden risks?

How Pesticides Alter Human Gut Bacteria

A study examined 18 pesticides, including DDT and chlorpyrifos, and their effects on 17 human gut bacteria species using lab cultures and mice.

Over a dozen pesticides altered bacterial growth, nutrient processing, and pesticide absorption, potentially extending exposure in the body.

Researchers mapped 306 metabolic changes affecting digestion, energy production, and immune regulation. Pesticides also impacted lipid pathways linked to inflammation. In mice, introducing Bacteroides ovatus after antibiotics reduced pesticide-induced inflammation by blocking oxidative stress.

This suggests some gut microbes can mitigate pesticide toxicity, highlighting probiotic potential to counteract related health risks.

Magnesium Blocker Slashes Weight Gain

Researchers developed CPACC, a drug that blocks magnesium entry into mitochondria, enhancing energy burning. In mice on high-sugar, high-fat diets, CPACC prevented obesity and fatty liver disease.

The drug mimics the effect of deleting the MRS2 gene, which regulates mitochondrial magnesium, boosting fat and sugar metabolism. Short-term CPACC treatment caused rapid weight loss and protected liver health.

The drug could reduce risks of heart attack, stroke, and liver cancer linked to poor diets. Currently experimental, CPACC awaits human trials and FDA approval.
