Israel Strikes Iran

Israel launched a major strike targeting Iran’s Natanz uranium facility, missile factories, and senior nuclear scientists and commanders, killing Gen. Hossein Salami, Gen. Gholamali Rashid, and key scientists.

Israel declared a national emergency, mobilizing tens of thousands of troops and expecting retaliation. Iran launched 100 drones aimed at Israel but the IAF says they have been neutralized.

Iran closed its airspace; the conflict disrupted global oil markets, pushing Brent crude nearly 9% higher to $78 per barrel. The strikes occurred days before planned U.S.-Iran talks.

Airplane Crash in India

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, en route to London, killing 241 onboard, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani and five medical students.

There were 242 people on board: 229 passengers and 12 crew members. The passenger mix included 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.

One passenger survived with injuries. The plane slammed into a medical college hostel in a crowded area during lunch. CCTV showed the aircraft descending slowly before crashing and bursting into flames within a minute of takeoff.

This was the first fatal accident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Boeing shares dropped 5%.

Meta’s “Superintelligence” Lab

Meta invested $14.3 billion to acquire a 49% stake in Scale AI, valuing the company at over $29 billion. Scale provides human-labeled data essential for training AI models used by leaders like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta.

Scale’s CEO, Alexandr Wang, 28, will lead Meta’s new Superintelligence lab while remaining on Scale’s board. Meta’s investment, about 10% of its 2024 revenue, aims to boost its AI capabilities and compete with Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

Meta’s AI chief emphasizes developing AI with reasoning and memory beyond current large language models.

US Labor Market Update

Weekly jobless claims rose to 248,000, the highest in eight months, while continuing claims increased by 54,000 to 1.956 million, a level unseen since November 2021.

Employers added 139,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in May, down from 193,000 a year ago. Job gain revisions for April 2024–March 2025 could cut monthly additions by up to 95,000.

Producer prices rose 0.1% in May, with a 2.6% annual increase, led by gasoline and egg cost rises. Core Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation held steady at 0.1% monthly and 2.6% yearly.

Detecting Cancer Three Years Before Diagnosis

Researchers found cancer-linked genetic mutations in blood samples up to three years before diagnosis. Analyzing 52 participants, eight tested positive on a multicancer early detection test; all developed cancer within four months.

Earlier samples from six of these showed mutations up to 3.5 years prior in four cases. The findings suggest cancer can be detected long before symptoms, enabling earlier, potentially more effective treatment.

Researchers stress the need to define test sensitivity standards and clinical follow-up procedures.

Psychiatric Disorders’ Shared Root Cause

Google DeepMind’s Weather Lab uses AI to predict tropical cyclone paths and intensity up to 15 days ahead, generating 50 scenarios per storm. It predicts 5-day tracks with 140 km better accuracy than the ENS model and outperforms NOAA’s intensity forecasts.

Weather Lab integrates global reanalysis and 45 years of cyclone data, producing 15-day forecasts in about one minute, meeting the National Hurricane Center’s 6.5-hour delivery standard. Starting in 2025, the NHC will test it alongside traditional models in real time.

Independent scientists found its performance comparable or superior to current models.
